Felix Gonzalez-Torres on the Art of Due Process

Monday 10 November 2014, 4.30PM

Speaker(s): Joan Kee (University of Michigan)

Felix Gonzalez-Torres,

Artist-issued certificates grant ownership to their bearer, frequently on condition that said owner fulfill various terms. In the past thirty years, such certificates of ownership have been increasingly prevalent and specific. Those drafted and issued by Felix Gonzalez-Torres in the late 1980s and early 1990s imply a distinct kind of agency at work, one that in fact constitutes a virtual model for considering and implementing artists’ rights. Although best known as a so-called "process" artist, Gonzalez-Torres thus foregrounded the issue of how artists might proactively claim for themselves a measure of due process.
