Cross-Currents in Art History: authors in conversation with readers

The Modernity of Ancient Sculpture: Greek Sculpture and Modern Art from Winckelmann to Picasso 978-1848859029

Organized, introduced, and moderated by Professor Whitney Davis, in this day-long symposium authors of recent books and/or series of essays in art history that cross over conventional boundaries of subject area and method will discuss their publication(s) with a reader from another branch of art history and visual studies, with the aim of exploring how different traditions and arenas of art-historical research might be brought into contact and new axes and avenues of art-historical writing opened up. Open discussion among all the authors and their interlocutors and with the audience will also feature.

  • 11:45 - 12:30 Break for lunch
  • 12:30 - 2.00 Leon Wainwright (Open U), author of 'Timed Out: Transnational Art and the Caribbean', in conversation with Natasha Eaton (UCL)
  • 2:15 - 3:45 Nigel Saint (Leeds University) co-editor of 'Modern French Visual Theory', in conversation with Jeremy Melius (Tufts University)
  • 4:00 - 5:30 Richard Meyer (Stanford), author of 'What Was Contemporary Art?', in conversation with Julia Bryan-Wilson (UC Berkeley/Terra Foundation Visiting Professor, Courtauld)
