The evaluation of ReflectED is a pragmatic two-arm cluster randomised controlled trial. It is a collaboration between York Trials Unit and the Department of Education, University of York and the School of Education, Durham University.

ReflectED is a whole school intervention focussing on metacognition skills (helping students to think about their own learning and reflect on ‘learning moments and strategies’) to support attainment (ReflectED, 2017). ReflectED is an approach to metacognition that comprises a combination of training for teachers (including an initial day long training and visit to Rosendale School), pre-planned lessons, technology-aided reflection for pupils (via an app), continuing training/discussion for teachers (within individual schools and in regional hubs) and visual scaffolds.

The ReflectED evaluation will evaluate the impact of ReflectED on the attainment of pupils in both KS1 and KS2, looking at attainment in both maths and reading. 140 schools will be recruited and randomised to either intervention or control, on a 1:1 basis. Intervention schools will receive five terms of ReflectED, beginning in January 2018. Control schools will be offered access to ReflectED at the end of the trial period.
Outcomes will be assessed after five terms of ReflectED (Summer 2019); the primary outcomes will be KS2 raw scores in maths and reading. The secondary outcomes will be KS1 raw scores in maths and reading and KS2 Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling (GPS) scores.

The evaluation report, including an in-depth process evaluation, will be published in Spring 2020.
