With the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) coming in to effect in May 2018, there is more focus than ever on data protection, consent and security around patient information.
GDPR strengthens the rights of individuals and replaces the 1998 Data Protection Act. You can read the new regulations here.
PCMIS are committed to supporting services through this transitional period and to ensuring ongoing compliance with the new regulations.
Shoring up the system for GDPR has been a key focus for our development team through 2017 and as of version 5.6 (released July 2017), PCMIS features a more granular approach to consent and data protection, to support service needs and comply with GDPR requirements.
In addition to the tools available in PCMIS, we recommend that services seek advice from within their own organisation around preparing for the new regulations. NHS IAPT services should consult their CCG and/or NHS England to clarify what is expected of them and to ensure they are fully prepared for the changes coming in May 2018.
Higher Education providers will most likely have a GDPR group ensuring a whole organisation approach to compliance - it would benefit any student support services to check in with them and clarify requirements.
The NHS Digital website has an area featuring GDPR Guidance from the national GDPR working group and IGA. It features updates on NHS policy as well as information on when new guidance will be published. We recommend regularly checking this site to ensure you have the most up to date information.
The site also features an informative GDPR webinar from February 2017.
On 19 January 2018, PCMIS Director Byron George will be facilitating a Digital Catapult event in Bradford, focussing on GDPR and health.
The event will be an opportunity to share learning and good practice, apply research and assess impact. With key insights, outcomes and recommendations being gathered and assessed, following the event, a report will be published and disseminated publicly.
We recommend checking Digital Capapult over the comings weeks for more information on how to register.
