We aim to provide all York students with an international dimension through their studies, and to prepare them for working in a global environment.
Increasingly employers are looking for people with initiative, motivation and a broader cultural awareness and studying or working abroad can be a formative experience in terms of personal development. Developing language skills helps with broader communication skills, provides an insight into other cultures and can help to prepare for a period of study or work abroad later.
Our Study Abroad programme, ensures that we can offer as many York students as possible the opportunity to study, work or teach overseas. We have partnerships in North America, Asia and Australia (see full list), as well as over ninety Erasmus exchange agreements with universities in Europe (see full list). Contact the Study Abroad Office for more information on becoming a partner institution.
In addition to studying abroad, there are opportunities for work experience abroad and the Study Abroad office and the Careers Service is working to increase the number of international internships and cultural exchange possibilities.
All first year undergraduate students at York are entitled to take a language course free of charge. Students can choose from a wide range of languages including Chinese, Japanese, Arabic and Russian.
Our membership of Worldwide Universities Network provides PhD students with a chance to spend up to three months at one of our international partner universities through the Research Mobility Programme.
