UK-Jiangsu 20+20 World Class
University Consortium

We are proud to be a founder member of the UK-Jiangsu 20+20 World-Class Universities Consortium. Jointly spearheaded by the British Council, Universities UK, and the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education, the consortium draws its impetus from the Chinese government’s ‘World-Class Universities and First-Class Disciplines’ initiative, which seeks to develop several of its institutions into world-class universities by 2020. Currently, there are 14 UK members and 23 Jiangsu members.

  • To build a platform that will deepen and broaden the level of strategic engagement and collaboration between universities in the UK and Jiangsu
  • To raise the profile of the Jiangsu higher education sector in the UK and of the UK higher education sector in Jiangsu
  • To harness multilateral cooperation as a mechanism to raise the quality and competitiveness of the participating institutions; sharing opportunities and addressing shared challenges together

Liverpool University holds the Secretariat for the UK partners, and Jiangsu University hosts the China members’ Secretariat. We are pleased to hold a position on the UK Steering Group, along with Liverpool, and Cranfield. To find out more, please visit the Consortium's website (here) and the British Council webpage (here).

The consortium encourages ‘many to many’ links between the universities involved. One example of this is the Doctoral Training Centre on Dependable Autonomous Systems (see below).

The following three research areas are prioritised: health, advanced manufacturing and environmental engineering. There is seed funding available for research projects and academic workshops that involve at least two-UK and two-Jiangsu partners. Please contact Elisha Witcomb for further information.

Doctoral Training Centre in Dependable Autonomous Systems (DPAS)

Three UK partners (Liverpool (lead), York and Queen’s Belfast) have established a DTC with three Jiangsu partners (Southeast University, Nanjing University of Science and Technology, and Soochow University). Professor Andy Tyrrell is the York lead. The centre will focus on the challenges of robot communication in future manufacturing environments. More information can be found here

Visiting Researcher Programme

The Jiangsu Province Department of Education (JPDE) provides funding for PhD students and ECRs to visit UK partner universities for up to one year. Funding is £8K for a six-month PhD placement and £16K for a one-year ECR placement. This is a fantastic opportunity to host a talented researcher and build or strengthen research links with a partner university in the Jiangsu Province. To find out more about and to register your interest in hosting, please follow this link:  UK Jiangsu 20+20 Visiting Researchers Programe (AY20/10) (PDF , 2,195kb)
