Title: Risk assessment on exposures to pesticides for sensitive human populations.

Supervisors: Professor Colin Brown (York), Dr Carmel Ramwell (Fera Science Ltd.), Dave Garthwaite (Fera Science Ltd.).

Chair of TAP: Dr Karen Thorpe (York).

PhD Description

My current study involves risk assessment on the exposures to pesticides for sensitive human populations including residents and pesticide operators based on different existing model algorithms. By using established toxicity reference points for individual pesticide active substances, risks were estimated for residents and operators based on No Observed Adverse Effect Level (NOAEL) and Acceptable Operator Exposure Level (AOEL), respectively. My future work will involve identifying the changes in pesticide usage and human health risk from pesticide exposure, as well as the efficiency of pesticide regulations at the UK level and the EU review process in reducing these risks.

The objectives are:
1. To identify the major trends of pesticide usage and the major drivers of these changes over the past 30 years within regions in the UK.
2. To study changes in human health risk from pesticide exposure over the study period and to assess the efficiency of pesticide regulation and the EU review process in reducing these risks.
3. To quantify the strength of association between the trend of pesticide usage and human health risk in respect to pesticide exposure estimates, toxicological thresholds and health statistics.
4. To propose likely trends of pesticide usage in the future based on the past.
