Douglas Taylor
PhD Student



Douglas Taylor is a South African, living in Dundee, Scotland and PhD student at the University of York.

A Chartered Accountant by profession, Douglas moved from accounting to banking and merchant banking while completing his MBA.  He then joined the Department of Accounting at Wits University as a lecturer in Finance and Management Accounting.  Later, he became stock market analyst before entering the financial communications industry where he worked for a UK company prior to running his own business for several years.  He returned to academia, teaching Management Accounting and Finance at Wits Business School.  During this time, he completed his MA in Applied Ethics with a dissertation on Ubuntu and corporate governance.  Douglas is an executive director of several private companies in South Africa and the UK, (some of which he owns) and he a non-executive director of the Institute of Race Relations and a Fellow of the Institute of Directors in South Africa.

Having commenced his PhD at Dundee University, Douglas moved to the University of York in 2019.  His research topic, “A Pragmatic Framework for Understanding, Securing & Maintaining a Social Licence to Operate”, is multi/transdisciplinary covering business, sociology and human geography.  Case studies to date cover the company/community interface in shale-gas extraction (fracking) and wind farms. Apart from his PhD, Douglas has a variety of research interests in the areas of ethics and governance, employment equity, financial reporting and communication, company valuation and corporate image/perceptions.

When his PhD is completed Douglas intends moving into the non-profit space, working to facilitate the Social Licence process with communities and companies, as well as hoping to become actively involved in the third sector, especially homeless and early childhood charities.
