"A Continuous Present"": The Long Sentence as a Novel Response to Contemporary Socio-political Disorder
Dr Lola Boorman & Professor James Williams
This project will examine the resurgence of the long sentence in contemporary Anglo-American fiction as a stylistic, narrative, and formal response to the pressures of neoliberalism, hypersaturation of media, resurgent fascism, and anthropocentric climate change. A fundamental unit of narration across any written medium, the sentence has been the site of modernist and postmodernist literary experimentation as well as a subject of disciplinary and philosophical enquiry. The sentence has rarely been the site of sustained critical study, and the resurgence of such a significant evolution of the sentence demands further,
dedicated study.
