Congratulations to Joan Ang, who graduated from the Department of English and Related Literature this summer.  Joan was joint winner of the annual Singapore Unbound Award for the Best Undergraduate Critical Essays on Singapore and Other Literature.  The prize was established in 2021 to encourage the teaching and study of Singapore literature at college level.

Joan's dissertation 'In Pursuit of Queer Singapore: Tracing Queer Time and Space in Singaporean Speculative Fiction' is a brilliant exploration of how contemporary Singaporean writers explore the movement of the queer body through space, and the passage of queerness through time.  Both Neon Yang and Ng Yi-Sheng, Joan argues, celebrate the transformative power of queerness in reframing individual agency against the demands of heteronormative temporality, and offer a glimpse of queer utopias.
