English at York ranked 5th in the Complete University Guide

Posted on 3 May 2019

We are delighted to have the Department of English and Related Literature's Top 10 position amply confirmed, with a rise of 3 places from last year.

Professor Helen Smith, Head of Department, commented: 'This result is a testament to our commitment to excellence in teaching and learning, our enviable reputation for cutting edge research, and the best graduate employment results among Russell Group English departments. It is a real privilege to be part of a superb department, which puts student wellbeing and academic excellence at the heart of all its activities'

The league table is derived from official data from the Research Excellence Framework 2014, the Higher Education Statistics Agency and this year’s National Student Survey, and also takes into account factors such as graduate prospects.

In total, five departments at the University were ranked in the UK top ten: Chemistry (4th), English (5th), History (6th), History of Art (6th), and Social Work (9th).
