Jennifer Egan: A reading and interview for Writers at York

On Thursday 16th November, the acclaimed American novelist read from her new novel Manhattan Beach and was interviewed by Dr Adam Kelly.

Manhattan Beach tells the story of Anna Kerrigan, who works in the Brooklyn Navy Yard during World War II and who becomes the first female diver in America. The novel also relates the story of her father Eddie Kerrigan and his boss Dexter Styles, who work in the shady gangster underworld of New York during the period.
 
Egan read from the first two chapters of her novel, and in the interview she discussed her Irish-American roots, the power of water in her work, and her plans for future novels.
