Naomi Gildert

Naomi Gildert

"My name is Naomi Gildert and I’m in my first year of a PhD in robotics in the Department of Electronic Engineering, having previously completed an MEng here as well.

I really enjoyed doing an MEng degree. Although it was challenging at times, it gave me a lot of valuable experience that was helpful when applying for jobs and is helpful now whilst doing my PhD.

I switched to the MEng in my first year because I knew the higher qualification was often sought after by employers, and if I wanted to go on to postgraduate study I knew an MEng would put me in the best position to do that.

I  think the four year course is brilliant because it helped me gain skills I could apply directly in industry or in research. MEng-only modules like SWEng (Software Engineering) provided fantastic opportunities to not only develop my technical skills but also other competencies expected in industry, such as written and verbal communication skills, conflict resolution etc. It was an absolute gold mine for go-to responses in job interviews.

In addition, the more research-based modules I did in my fourth year, as well as my Masters’ Project, all adequately prepared me for doing a PhD, as well as preparing my friends who went into industry. These modules taught me how to absorb information independently, tackle steep learning curves, consolidate a lot of knowledge I had already gained throughout the degree and navigate the entire lifecycle of a project. All skills that are invaluable for a career in Engineering.

I would heartily suggest to anyone to take the MEng degree. I think it provides you with such a strong foundation in which to build your future, plus, it means you get to spend another year in York, and who wouldn’t want to do that?"
