4G Coverage from the Helikite flying above the West Campus rugby pitch

Posted on 31 August 2021

The Helikite is able to provide 4G coverage for up to 200 metres.

On 17 August 2021 Yi Chu, Josh Shackleton, David Grace and the technical team led by Andy White carried out a test flight of the 21 m3 Helikite with an upgraded payload on York’s West Campus rugby pitch. The Helikite payload carries an open-source LTE base station which is able to provide 4G coverage for over 200 meters. The payload also incorporates a GoPro MAX action camera mounted on a 3-axis gimbal to live stream the video footage to external social media platforms. Future plans have been made to operate the private LTE/5G network from the Helikite to provide temporary coverage for The Forbidden Corner as part of the MANY project.
