Professor Andy Tyrrell, head of the Department, recently gave an Invited Keynote presentation at the fourth International Workshop on Self-awareness in Cyber-Physical Systems (SelPhyS 2019) in Munich. His talk, entitled ‘Bio-inspired hardware for self-aware architectures and robots: knobs and monitors’, discussed the use of biology as an inspiration for robotic and computer hardware design. The talk had a particular emphasis on integrating self-awareness into hardware design, allowing robots and computers to detect their own malfunctions and repair them, without the input of the user.
