Wednesday 3 November 2021, 3.00PM to 4.00pm
Speaker(s): Dr Claudine Bowyer-Crane, National Institute of Economic and Social Research
Covid-19 has significantly disrupted children’s education, with the last normal school year for most children being the year 2018/19. It is too early to fully understand the impact this will have on children’s outcomes, but it is likely that the impact will be felt most keenly at the early stages of education when the fundamental building blocks are put in place. Of particular concern is children’s language and socioemotional development given the social isolation many children experienced over the course of two lockdowns. The School Starters project investigates the impact of Covid-19 on children who started school in the Autumn term 2020/21, with a particular focus on language and socioemotional development. In this talk I will share our initial findings from this project and next steps. I will also introduce our new ICICLES project; a three-year longitudinal study exploring the impact of Covid-19 on children’s outcomes in KS1.
