Remote Access

There are several different ways in which you can access resources on campus when you aren't here. For all of them you will first need to connect to The University of York Virtual Private Network (VPN), which creates a secure connection for you.

This is the high performance cluster in ARRC for staff and post-graduate use. This is in the process of being upgraded and the performance will increase significantly in the near future.  You need to register for this facility, full details on who to contact and how to do that are here. This allows you to access various software packages and run large high capacity jobs over long periods of time.

Digital Workspace Service

This service allows you to connect to a virtualised desktop from your office PC, laptop, home PC, Mac or tablet. You can choose between a Windows 7 or XP desktop. The following pages give full details, instructions, and explain the difference between WebPortal and AppPortal.‌

Access to your desktop PC

If you are a member of staff in the department you can also arrange to have remote access to your supported desktop PC. In order to do this you would need to make sure that your account has been given the correct permissions, contact Paul Hodgson to check this. Please let him know the name of the machine you want to connect to, ecopcxxx.

Once you have that permission you would need to connect to the VPN, and then use the Remote Desktop Connection software to connect. This software is part of Windows 7 and Windows 10, and can be downloaded free for Mac

The path you would connect to would be in the following format, machinename - where machinename is your ecopcxxx reference.
Also, connect with your username in the following format: itsyork\abc123
