As of October 2020, as the largest bibliographic database dedicated to Economics, the IDEAS/RePEc ranked our department overall the 55th in the world, 20th in Europe and 7th in the UK (https://ideas.repec.org/top/top.econdept.html).  By subject, York’s Economics Department has done particularly well in the fields of Health Economics, Econometrics, Microeconomics, International Finance and Behavioural Economics. For Health Economics (https://ideas.repec.org/top/top.hea.html), which York has pioneered for decades, we are the 6th in the world, just after NBER, Harvard, MIT, Stanford and University of Southern California. Three members of our faculty are among the world top health economists: Professor Andrew Jones is the UK No. 1 and 13th globally, while Professor Nigel Rice and Professor Luigi Siciliani are among the world top 100 as well. For Econometrics (https://ideas.repec.org/top/top.ecm.html), we are 18th internationally and No. 3 in the UK, where Professor Yongcheol Shin is No.2 in the UK and 18th internationally. For Microeconomics (https://ideas.repec.org/top/top.mic.html), York takes the 67th position in the world and 7th in the UK. For international finance (https://ideas.repec.org/top/top.ifn.html) and behavioural economics (https://ideas.repec.org/top/top.cbe.html), our department is ranked globally 79th and 83rd, respectively.

Professor Yuan Ju, Deputy Head of Department (Research), added: “Together with the most recent Tilburg and Shanghai rankings, this again eloquently confirms our research excellence in all major areas of economics. This year alone, our department has had publications/acceptances in the leading journals such as the Journal of Political Economy, Review of Economic Studies, Management Science, Annals of Statistics, Journal of the American Statistical Association, Review of Economics and Statistics, Journal of Financial Economics, the Economic Journal and Journal of Econometrics.”
