York Toilet Twinning are a pioneering charity that raise money to build toilets for the 2.3+ billion people who currently do not have access to proper sanitary conditions, clean water or knowledge about cleanliness and hygiene.
Unhygienic and improper sanitary conditions not only adversely affect human health, and thereby their livelihood, but also reduces life expectancy and leads to premature deaths. Poor toilet conditions also lead to improper disposal of waste, which further pollutes the environment and degrades living conditions.
At the University of York, together with the charity toilettwinning.org, we are helping to build toilets for the people affected. Donations as low as £60 are enough to provide a loo or latrine to a house in need (typically shared between 6 individuals), and for just £240 a whole school block can get proper toilets! Your donation will not only help in building the toilets, but also in teaching people the importance of cleanliness and hygiene.
Their vision: To fund one new sanitation facility for each toilet on campus. Put simply, twinning every single toilet in the University of York!
Each year, Commercial Services host an event called The Great York Cake Off. The event encourages both students and staff to bake whatever cake they want, for the chance to win a prestigious prize. The overall winning bake is also sold across campus with 25p of each cake sale directly donated to York Toilet Twinning.
This year The Great York Cake Off was held on 19 October, and during the event we managed to raise over £50 for Toilet Twinning. The winning cake is being sold around campus until Easter 2019.
Get yourself a little treat whilst supporting a worthy cause! If you see the winning cake around campus (Peanut Butter Brownie) remember that your purchase will directly support York Toilet Twinning. We will also have collection pots in 3 different locations (see outlets here) where you can donate directly.

YourCafe - tackling food waste; promoting community spirit
"We are a weekly café that serves meals sourced from surplus food destined for landfill. The café provides a place for the community to come together, make friends and tackle the issue of food waste on a local level. It is run completely by our passionate volunteers and works on a pay-as-you-feel basis."
YourCafe forms part of The Real Junk Food Project, which is an organisation determined to cut down on food waste.
We have managed to create a system in all of our on campus kitchens that helps us save unwanted or left over foods. Instead of binning these products, we collect them and then pass these products over to YourCafe. This helps them in many ways; it helps them when they are cooking in their cafe but it also helps them raise funds through their Fill Bellies Not Bins events. To read more about these events and this extension of the charity, please check the next tab.
"There are many ways in which you can be a part of helping Yourcafe come together week after week. Here you will find out a little bit more about how you can help and where we are currently in most need."
Volunteer at Your Cafe, the cafe relies on their team of hardworking volunteers who help with everything from gardening to serving food. You can also offer your skills to help them in other ways, whether it be web design, cooking, social media promotion or something else! Finally you can donate, YourCafe relies on food donations from a range of supermarkets, producers and restaurants across York. If you would like to become a food donor then please let them know. They also welcome financial donations! To help with any of this please contact them via firstname.lastname@example.org

Fill Bellies Not Bins is an extension scheme run by YourCafe. This is predominately run by students at The University of York. They have recently run several events on campus to raise funds for Yourcafe and reduce food waste.
At each event YourCafe volunteers and students give out lots of food on a pay-as-you-feel basis! The more you eat, the more food they save.
"The food we receive for the event will be perfectly good food that cafes or supermarkets are unable to sell because of sell-by dates, best-before dates etc. Roughly one third of the food produced in the world for human consumption every year is wasted. YourCafe forms part of The Real Junk Food Project, an organisation determined to cut down this waste."
