David joined the Centre for Housing Policy in 1991. He has been involved in a range of research projects on the private rented sector, his main area of research interest. With Peter Kemp he completed the first survey of private landlords in Scotland in 1994.
From 1995 to 2001 he was responsible for producing the University of York Index of Private Rents and Yields. He has undertaken an evaluation of the buy to let initiative, and a study of the impact of student demand on local housing markets.
