Research Fellow

  • BA (First Class Honours) Sociology and Social Policy, University of Newcastle on Tyne
  • MA Industrial Relations, University of Warwick
  • PhD, Open University

Anwen joined the Centre in 1997 to work on a Joseph Rowntree Foundation funded study of young people's housing and employment in rural areas. She has completed work on women's experience of homelessness for Crisis; access to GPs for people sleeping rough for the Department of Health; the provision of life skills training to homeless people for Scottish Homes; on good practice in tackling anti-social behaviour in mixed tenure areas for CLG; on a review of initiatives to prevent homelessness for the Welsh Assembly Government; a study examining the concept of daytime homelessness and the extent and nature of daytime provision for homeless people for Crisis.

Anwen also worked with Nicholas Pleace and Deborah Quilgars on the evaluation of Shelter's resettlement service for homeless families and an evaluation of Shelter Inclusion Project, a service for perpetrators of anti-social behaviour. She has worked on a number of European comparative studies on financial literacy and inclusion, homelessness and homeownership. She has also completed work on homelessness among ex-service personnel in London for ESAG; on LA allocations and lettings policies (with Heriot Watt) and was part of a team (led by NatCen) examining evidence of good practice in meeting the needs of ex-offenders for CLG.

Anwen has also worked on two evaluations of services working with ex-offenders for Shelter. She also worked with a team from Sheffield Hallam on an evaluation of Housing Benefit Sanctions for perpetrators of anti-social behaviour for the Department of Work and Pensions; an evaluation of Sanctuary Schemes for CLG; and an evaluation of the Glasgow Hostel Decommissioning Programme.

More recently, Anwen completed a major review of single homelessness in the UK 2000 – 2010 (with Nicholas Pleace) for Crisis and worked with Karen Croucher on two evaluations for the National End of Life Care Programme. Anwen is currently working on a longitudinal evaluation of a new initiative to prevent homelessness; the Peer Landlord model has been developed by Commonweal Landlords and is being piloted by Catch 22 and Thames Reach.  Anwen is also working (with Sarah Johnsen at Heriot Watt) on an evaluation of local Reconnection policies for Crisis and a major new study commissioned by Stoll and Riverside and funded by Forces in Mind Trust, on the housing and support needs of veterans in Great Britain.
