Barry Thomas is a Physical Organic Chemist who also has interests in Environmental and Industrial Chemistry. His research activities centred on electron transfer processes in organic chemistry and their synthetic potential particularly the selectivity of such processes. His interest in the chemistry of freshwater systems resulted in his having de facto responsibility on campus for the wildfowl, an aspect of life at York which sets the University apart from other UK institutions!
He is now retired but is the part-time manager for a project funded by the European Space Agency in the Department. Before retirement he oversaw the delivery of all the Department’s taught courses as Chair of the Departmental Teaching Committee. He had responsibility for a number of other aspects of the Departmental affairs including the co-ordination of the Year Abroad programmes.
