Estimating the Economic Burden of Antibiotic Resistance & The Potential Impact of Vaccines

Nichola Naylor

Thursday 15 June 2023, 11.15AM to 12.15pm

Speaker(s): Nichola Naylor, LSHTM

Abstract:

This talk will focus on the methods and outputs produced as part of a World Health Organisation collaborative project assessing the potential impact of bacterial vaccines on antibiotic resistance globally. To estimate the potential direct cost impact of vaccines on healthcare systems and labour productivity, first the incremental impacts of resistance had to be estimated. The AMR-UCR (antimicrobial resistance unit cost repository) was created for this purpose, utilising data from published evidence and hierarchical grouping of drugs, bugs, syndromes and regions. This was combined with epidemiological estimates (based off the GRAM-project) to estimate the potential impacts of vaccination. Throughout the project, many assumptions around scope, scale and handling missing data had to be made. These will be presented and discussed, with future recommendations for such research given based off of these experiences.

Location: Hybrid in Alcuin A Block A/019/20 and via Zoom (not recorded)
