Nearly 20 years of using economic evaluation in drug reimbursement decisions: what have we achieved?

Monday 22 August 2011, 1.00PM to 2.00pm

Speaker(s): Professor Mike Drummond, University of York

Abstract: It is nearly 20 years since Australia became the first country to require economic evaluations as a key component of decisions about reimbursement of pharmaceuticals. Since then, more than 30 countries have followed Australia’s lead, although the nature and extent of the application of the policy varies greatly by jurisdiction.

This presentation assesses what has been achieved by this policy shift. It discusses the state of the world before the introduction of economic evaluation and the impact that the new approach has had on (i) the structure of institutional frameworks for drug reimbursement (ii) the processes and methods followed and (iii) the outcomes in terms of the decisions made.

Location: Alcuin A Block A019/020
