An interview with Professor Brian Ferguson

Professor Brian Ferguson currently shares the role of Chief Economist at Public Health England and is also Director of the NIHR’s Public Health Research Programme. This seminar will take an ‘interview’ format where Brian will answer questions on issues including priorities for public health after COVID-19 and key features of research seeking policy impact. There will be opportunities for questions from the audience throughout. 

Brian Ferguson biography

Brian Ferguson joined Public Health England in April 2013 having previously been Director of the Yorkshire & Humber Public Health Observatory and Co-Director of the Northern and Yorkshire Cancer Registry. Brian was Chair of the UK & Ireland Association of PHOs from April 2006 to March 2011. From January 2015 he has been the Chief Economist for PHE.

In July 2020 Brian took up the (part-time) role of Director of the Public Health Research Programme for the National Institute for Health Research, hosted by the University of York where he is a professor in the Department of Health Sciences.

Brian has previously held posts as Deputy Director of the Centre for Health Economics, University of York, and was the founding Professor of Health Economics in the University of Leeds. He was a member of the National Public Health Career Scientist Award Panel for five years, served on NICE”s Public Health Interventions Advisory Committee between 2005-08 and was an NHS non-executive director for four years. Between 2018-20 he was Chair of the OECD Expert Group on the Economics of Prevention.

Brian was admitted to the UK Public Health Register in 2007 and currently holds  registration until February 2022.
