Applied Health Economics: Applied Research Methods for the Analysis of Health and Health Care

A three-day course focusing on the use of applied quantitative methods for the analysis of health and health care data. The course is run by the Health, Econometrics and Data Group; a collaboration between the Centre for Health Economics and the Department of Economics and Related Studies at the University of York.

The workshop will present recent research undertaken as part of an Economic and Social Research Council Large Grant. Topics to be covered include: methods for the analysis of health care cost data; duration modelling of cancer incidence; evaluation of the smoking ban in England; cross-country comparison of health care responsiveness; analysis of social class differences in adolescent smoking behaviour; and the impact of schooling quality on health outcomes. Lectures will cover the research question, methodological approach and its empirical implementation together with Stata code used for estimation. Computer-based practical exercises will complement the lectures to enable participants to gain experience in the application of the methods. 

The course is aimed at PhD students, junior researchers and policy makers working in applied health economics and wishing to learn more about the use of empirical methods and the findings of the research projects.

Throughout the course an emphasis will be placed on the empirical methods used in addressing research questions. These include, assessing and correcting for reporting bias in self-reports of health care quality (responsiveness), decomposition techniques to explore social class differences in smoking behaviours, policy evaluation techniques including methods of matching and regression based difference-in-differences, comparison of approaches to modelling health care cost data, and duration modelling of time to cancer diagnosis.

The course will cover research papers relevant to the analysis of health and health care data. Sessions will be split between lectures and computer-based practicals.

The course will be held in the EXEC/computer-training lab in the Alcuin Research Resource Centre (ARRC:http://www.york.ac.uk/inst/arrc/ ). The software package used for the practical examples is Stata and each participant will have access to a PC with Stata 12 installed. Stata do-files containing the code required to complete the practical exercises will be provided. A basic familiarisation with Stata will be an advantage.
