A new campus nursery

The university has run a popular nursery for many years, however our existing nursery building has reached the end of its lifespan. This project will allow us to relocate the provision to another more suitable site on campus and enable the university to provide a purpose built, modern nursery increasing childcare provision on campus for staff, students and local families.

It is anticipated the new building will include extended availability for babies with up to 30 baby places across three baby units, a dedicated toddler room and separate pre-school room.

The plans have changed a little since they were first approved in 2019. We are now no longer aiming for the building to be designed specifically along Passivhaus principles, however some standards will be maintained and we are aiming for a green, sustainable development.

When?

Once the plans are finalised we anticipate that work will start on the new site in autumn 2022. The new building should be open to families in the late spring/summer of 2023.

Where?

The new location for the nursery is on Campus East, opposite from the York Sport Village. This position offers the university the opportunity to provide a larger building with additional child spaces as well as expanded outdoor play areas and dedicated drop off parking.

Benefits

The project aims to:

  • Create an expanded provision, more than doubling current available places
  • Offer a modern engaging environment for children and staff
  • Increase outdoor space and facilities
