Dr Nick Huberts is an economics lecturer, who joined the School for Business and Society in August 2018. He did his Doctorate at Tilburg University (the Netherlands) in Optimal Stopping problems, after which he held a lecturer position at De Montfort University, Leicester. He holds a MSc. degree in Quantitative Finance and Actuarial Science, a MSc. Degree (Research Master) in Finance, and a BSc. degree in Econometrics and Operations Research. During his PhD he has obtained an award for best teacher in the category doctoral students and his job market paper won the best students paper award at the 20th Annual International Conference on Real Options. His research interests include (strategic) decisions under uncertainty, real options, game theory, industrial organisation, and mechanism design. His areas of teaching include microeconomics, operations research, mathematical analysis, linear algebra, industrial organisation, and game theory.
Nick’s current research combines the fields of operations research (optimal stopping problems), game theory and industrial organisation. More specifically, he looks at the optimal investment strategies of firms in an oligopoly setting under uncertainty where their strategies comprise of timing and the investment size, ie capacity. From his collaborative project with Bielefeld University and Tilburg university, his most recent publication in EJOR shows that in an incumbent entrant setting, incumbents underinvest in their attempt to deter entry when timing is taken into account. Other recent projects involve mechanism design/auction theory and intertemporal pricing. In a project with Professor Jacco Thijssen the intersection between network theory and optimal stopping problems is explored.
