Dr Elina Stylianou
Postgraduate Supervisor and Academic Skills Tutor

Profile

Biography

I am a PG Supervisor and Academic Skills Tutor in the School for Business and Society. I have a degree in English Language and Literature, a Master’s in English Literature and a PhD in Education. I am interested in TESOL and English for Academic Purposes.

My PhD research investigated the use of culturally familiar literary text in teaching English as a foreign language. As a teacher-researcher, I have designed and delivered a novel intervention; I used Homer’s Odyssey in English translations to teach English in a Cypriot secondary school.

My teaching experience in Higher Education includes designing and delivering online seminars to undergraduate students and supervising students for their Final Year Project in the School of Education and Professional Development, at the University of Huddersfield. I have also delivered both face to face and online lectures and practical sessions in English for Academic Purposes, to international PhD students from different disciplines.

My other teaching experience includes designing and delivering English sessions to primary and secondary school students, as a National Tuition Programme Tutor, and working in a secondary school. I have supported SEN students in the classroom and delivered interventions to visually impaired students. As EAL coordinator, I have managed the EAL department of the school and worked with EAL students from Europe, Asia and Africa.
