Exploring the treasure trove – using natural history collections to study biodiversity

Thursday 24 October 2019, 1.00PM

Speaker(s): Natalie Cooper, Natural History Museum, London

Natural history collections are vital for all kinds of research, however in an age of digital media they are increasingly under threat. In this talk I will describe some of the projects I’m involved in at NHM London, and reveal some of the new techniques we can use to get information out of collections that are hundreds of years old. To demonstrate this I’ll use the story of Hope, a female blue whale that stranded in Ireland over 100 years ago, whose remains are still providing insights into blue whales today.
