Virus discovery and antiviral RNAi across the metazoa

Speaker(s): Dr Darren Obbard, Edinburgh

Studies of animal-virus interaction are dominated by human and livestock pathogens, but if we want to generalise our understanding of the (co-) evolutionary process, we need to also look at invertebrates and their naturally occurring viruses. I will describe how the metagenomic sequencing of small RNAs, in addition to standard RNAseq, has been useful in the discovery of new arthropod viruses, and how we have also used a joint siRNA/RNAseq approach to identify unexpected variation in the antiviral RNAi responses of the metazoa.
