Lauren also received a monetary prize. A matching contribution was made to the Target Ovarian Cancer charity.
Sabrina Jones was a Biochemistry undergraduate student who succumbed to ovarian cancer in March 2017. The prize created in her honour recognises exceptional academic achievement in the first year of our Biochemistry course. Target Ovarian Cancer is the charity that her family and friends support, which raises awareness of ovarian cancer and provides vital research funding.
Sabrina started the Biochemistry with a Year in Industry programme in September 2015 and was very active in the University of York’s swimming club. Sadly, she was diagnosed with small cell ovarian cancer in December 2015 and had to take a leave of absence from her studies. After surgery, chemotherapy and a period of recovery, Sabrina’s scans showed her to be cancer-free, but shortly after restarting her studies the cancer returned. Throughout this ordeal Sabrina remained positive and engaged with the Biochemistry course and her coursemates in York – she was and will continue to be an inspiration to all that knew her.
