UK's international students vote University of York as the country's top university

Posted on 21 May 2014

The University of York has won the International Student Choice Category Award for the best overall University experience at the Whatuni Student Choice awards.

Voted by users of Hotcourses' flagship international education site HotcoursesAbroad.com and their dozen local language sites, the International award was a special category on the night.

The award, presented at a ceremony at the Waldorf Hilton Hotel in London on 13 May, was decided solely by thousands of university reviews and ratings left by international students and graduates on the sites over the past year. Ratings covered areas such as study and life experiences, as well as job prospects.

York beat nine of the top British institutions to claim the international honour. Durham and Plymouth Universities came second and third respectively in a category which also featured the Universities of Glasgow, Warwick and Lancaster.

Except for the International award, all the other awards were decided by users of Hotcourses' domestic university and course comparison site, Whatuni.

Nearly 18,000 student reviews decided the evening's winners at the ceremony hosted by broadcaster Clive Anderson and attended by former Education Minister Estelle Morris.

Hotcourses CEO Mike Elms said: "The TripAdvisor-style reviews offer a real insight into what studying at university is really like. I would like to offer my congratulations to all universities that won or were short-listed for an award category. These awards are based on the experiences of your students and that is something for which you should be rightly proud."

Nusrat Bashir, the University of York’s International Recruitment Manager, said: "We are very pleased to receive this award which is a credit to the entire University community at York. The award recognises the excellent work undertaken by our academic and student support staff, as well as the important role the whole student body plays in helping to enhance the experience of our international students."

Hotcourses Abroad sits at the centre of the organisation’s network of international sites for students seeking study options abroad. The sites cover students located in Europe, Asia and Africa, including Uniguru for Indian and South Asian students.

Reviews can be submitted for any institution located in 10 of the most popular study destinations in the world. However, Hotcourses' International team work with nearly a thousand universities and colleges to help them connect with prospective international students.
