York research shortlisted for Newton Fund prize

Professor Frans Maathuis’s research to increase the tolerance of rice to salinity and drought, has been shortlisted for the 2019 Newton Prize.

Now in its fifth year, the Newton Prize is a £1m award which recognises excellence in research and innovation.

Professor Maathuis, who is based in the University’s Department of Biology, said: “'We’re delighted to hear we are being shortlisted for the prestigious Newton Prize and hope it will help generate real impact for Philippine rice farmers.”

The shortlist will be considered by a judging panel in October and the winner will be announced in December.
