Good practices to be followed by Managers

Good management of staff is a key factor in the control of stress.  All Biology managers should have the skills to avoid applying a level of stress that could cause adverse health effects on their staff.  The level will vary from person to person- the skill is to apply effective management techniques to avoid it happening.

Some good generic practices, that all managers of staff are expected to follow, include:

  • setting realistic deadlines
  • consulting with staff about their work and how it is done
  • allowing staff as much control as reasonably possible over their job
  • encouraging staff to communicate with their manager if they have problems or worries
  • providing good support to staff as and when required
  • developing tasks and work patterns aimed at reducing stress
  • supporting and enabling staff to achieve a good work-life balance

It is important to bear in mind that, even if the way the work is organised cannot be significantly altered, managers can still offer simple, positive solutions such as providing practical support and acknowledging the challenges faced by employees.
