Spillage & Emergency Standards

  • Buy plastic coated ‘Winchester’ bottles (2.5 litres) of hazardous liquid chemical to minimise risk of breakage if dropped
  • Be prepared for dealing with accidental spillages (small or large).  If required, all labs have a Spill Kit (PDF , 148kb) (with a procedure for dealing with spillages)
  • If a spillage occurs, keep calm and take any appropriate remedial action, following instructions on the spillage kit as a guide if necessary
  • Where a spillage involves personal contamination:
    • Wash immediately with copious amounts of water
    • Use the emergency shower or ‘pull out shower hose’ if necessary
    • Shout for assistance if required
    • Report the accident on the appropriate form
  • If it is not possible to clear up the spillage without compromising the safety of yourself or others, immediately report it to your Group Leader, Area Safety Monitor OR report directly to the Biology Infrastructure Group and/or the Departmental H&S Advisor.
