Building a safe maritime autonomy ecosystem

In March we held our first workshop focused on introducing maritime autonomy and the challenges of safety and assurance. The workshop identified ways to introduce and build a safe maritime autonomy ecosystem which have been put together in a new report.

Senior leaders from across the maritime industry, including shipbuilders and equipment suppliers, regulators,  pilots, insurers, lighthouse services and consultants discussed detailed use case examples which offered valuable and real-world insight into the issues being faced by the maritime sector.

From this workshop and attendee feedback we have developed a report outlining key findings and recommended actions for the safe introduction and growth or maritime autonomy.

Key findings

  • The three critical enablers to maritime autonomy are credible safety assurance, effective regulatory processes and establishment of a compelling business case.
  • The maritime community has concerns about the current state of standards and regulations, and would like to see more rapid progress on workable regulations, both internationally and at national level.
  • Regulatory development, with government support, is seen as crucial to enable the successful introduction of autonomy.
