PERSONA is a research and development project which brings together three of Yorkshire’s most exciting small digital enterprises – York Mediale, Viridian FX and KMA – with one of the UK’s most vital contemporary voices in Electronic Music – Gazelle Twin and researchers Dr Jez Wells and Ben Eyes at the University of York, Music Department.

Through a series of intensive residencies, GT will experiment and extend her work across film, FX, theatre, immersive and spatial sound.

The resulting live and digital output was premiered at York Mediale in October 2020, and further live touring is planned.

Beyond the groundbreaking live/digital artistic outputs, the collaboration will pose the following research challenges and questions around:

  • Narrative storytelling, digital identity and image-making in live environments: how can mixed media and immersive storytelling increase the reach and impact of performance?
  • Possibilities of live ‘performance’ where the artist is not present: in line with UoY Athena Swan action plan / and sector-wide initiatives like PRS Keychange, how can this research and development collaboration help address gender inequality in performing arts/creative industries?
  • Exploration of the role of spatial and immersive sound contemporary music performance, live and on-screen: in a fast-evolving cultural landscape, how can immersive technologies be harnessed and by a leading experimental performance artist to create innovative and viable products, services and artistic concepts?
