With a box office surpassing one and a half billion dollars, Inside Out 2 recently became the most profitable animated film of all time -- proving that in a fast-changing industry, animation is still one of the most thriving and successful genres.

For the last 25 years, York alumnus Mark Burton has worked on numerous feature animation projects both here and in Hollywood, and in this lecture offers a very personal insight into what he has learned about storytelling.

As part of the presentation, we will be screening an extract from the Shaun the Sheep Movie, after which Mark will talk in more detail about the thinking that went into what we’ve just seen.

Mark Burton

Mark graduated from York University in 1983 with a degree in History & Politics. After getting material accepted on BBC Radio, he went on to write for a variety of TV comedy shows including Spitting Image, Alas Smith & Jones, and the long-running topical satire Have I Got News For You.

His first foray into feature animation came when he was asked to provide additional dialogue for Chicken Run. He subsequently co-wrote Aardman’s Wallace & Gromit: Curse of the Were-rabbit.

He spent time working at DreamWorks and other U.S studios, where he co-wrote Madagascar, Miramax’s Gnomeo & Juliet and 20th Century Fox’s Aliens in The Attic.

Mark returned to Aardman for Shaun the Sheep Movie (2015) which was his first job as a writer/director, sharing the role with Shaun the Sheep series creator Richard Starzak. The film earned them a Bafta and Oscar nomination.

He has collaborated with Nick Park on Early Man, and the forthcoming Wallace & Gromit feature Vengeance Most Fowl. He is also a co-writer on Paddington in Peru which is due for release in November ’24.
