Eva Laurie

Profile

I studied Archaeology at the University of Cambridge and passed my undergraduate degree in 2000. I then went to the University of Leicester for an MA in Post-Excavation Studies which I completed in 2001. I finally attended the University of York and obtained a PhD in 2006.
My MA dissertation catalogued the land snails from the Pupcina cave site in Istria, Croatia. The PhD research focussed on the seasonality of cockles (Cerastoderma edule (Linnaeus 1758)) at two Danish shell midden sites, Norsminde and Krabbesholm. Since then I have been involved in the analysis of shell midden sites in Spain, Ireland, Scotland and other Danish sites. I have also done ad hoc analysis of shells from different periods from the Bronze Age to Roman. I am currently sorting and analysing shells from the shell mounds found on The Farasan Islands in the Red Sea for the DISPERSE Project.

Research Interests

My main area of interest is the changing collection patterns through shell middens, particularly over the Mesolithic/Neolithic transition. With an emphasis on how these differences can be used to understand the importance of shellfish in the diet, the changing use of the shoreline and shallow sea habitats over time and the speed of the transition from a primarily hunter-gatherer economy to a primarily agricultural one.
