Profile

I am a researcher in contemporary archaeology, currently specialising in popular music heritage. Projects have included work on the Sex Pistols (with John Schofield) and at the moment, popular music shrines especially those dedicated to David Bowie (with Hilary Orange).

Originally a prehistorian (PhD Southampton 1990), I started researching modern material culture whilst with the CNRS in Paris in 1992. Key publications include Matter Materiality and Modern Culture (edited, Routledge, 2000) and The Oxford Handbook of the Archaeology of the Contemporary World (edited with Rodney Harrison and Angela Piccini, 2013), plus numerous other pieces on subjects as diverse as the Kalashnikov AK47 and out of town shopping centres.

I am a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Contemporary Archaeology and currently maintain a website for the Contemporary History and Archaeology in Theory conference.
