Public Understandings of the Legacies of Transatlantic Slavery

Supervision:  Dr. Jonathan Finch

Host Institution:  Department of Archaeology, University of York

Profile

I am an anthropologist with a background in history. I received a BA in History from the University of the West Indies (St Augustine) and MA in Anthropology from the University of Florida (Gainesville). My previous research was in the area of plantation slavery heritage in the Caribbean and the dissonance between the history and the heritage presented for tourist consumption. This led to my interest in the transatlantic slave trade and how its legacy has been memorialised around the former Atlantic world. My PhD research project will investigate processes of memorialisation and heritage creation as cultural legacies of the transatlantic slave trade in Europe, the Caribbean, West Africa and the United States.
