York is a centre of research excellence in medieval and historical archaeology.

We have broad research interests linked to many of the most significant themes of medieval and historical archaeology, including the medieval Islamic world.

We look at the relationship archaeology has with art, history and material culture. We explore sociopolitical transitions through history such as:

  • Local and global trade, exchange and interaction
  • Settlement and inhabitation of buildings, landscapes and social spaces
  • Working and social relationships between people, animal and animal products.

We also analyse material expressions of identity and its relationship to social location, as well as studying the archaeology of death and memory.

As part of our interdisciplinary approach we work closely with our colleagues in the Centre for Medieval Studies and Centre for Eighteenth Century Studies.
