The recent Viking Congress, in Lerwick, Shetland, from 3 to 10 August, showcased the work of a number of researchers at York. This included the investigation of Julian Richards into the Viking winter camp at Torksey. Steve Ashby presented a paper on 'Rethinking Viking combmaking', which drew on his own work, as well as that undertaken with many of the department's friends and family, including Ashley Coutu, Soren Sindbaek, Isabella von Holstein, Nienka van Doorn, Stacie Sachs, Anne Brundle, Mike Buckley and Matthew Collins. As well, a chaired a session on Mapping the Viking World, featured talks by Soren Sindbaek and Sarah Croix (of the Aarhus and York Entrepot project). Beyond discussing this research, Congress delegates visited brochs and Viking sites at Jarlshof, Old Scatness, Mousa and Clickhimin.
