Archaeology at York has been steadily climbing the league tables for research excellence over the last fifteen years.

In RAE2001 the Department was ranked 23rd amongst Archaeology departments, rising to equal 9th in RAE2008.

In the results of the Research Excellence Framework (REF2014) announced today, we climbed to 4th amongst UK Archaeology departments within Panel 17, which also included Geography and  Environmental Studies.

One of the assessments introduced for the first time in REF 2014 was the wider societal impact of research, and amongst archaeology departments our research was ranked 2nd.

The Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014) measured the quality and impact of research submitted by UK universities across all disciplines.
