Dr Stephen Buckley has joined the Department as a Wellcome Bioarchaeology Fellow. Stephen's project, entitled "Evidence for the systematic use of antimicrobial and insecticidal natural products in ancient Egyptian burial practices" will be based in the Departments of Chemistry, Biology and Archaeology, and he will be using specially commissioned laboratories in BioArch.
Stephen conducted Masters research on organic materials used in New Kingdom Egyptian Mummification, before completing a PhD at the University of Bristol with Richard Evershed.
He has worked on Royal Egyptian Mummies in the Valley of the Kings, both KV39 and KV35. He is particularly interested in the role of the organic materials in body preservation, and his research has been widely covered, in both the USA and Europe.
