Biography

I was previously Professor of Global Politics at the Open University and, before that, Professor of International Development and Head of the Department of Geography and Professor of Politics at the University of Sheffield. I am an Adjunct Professor at the Institut Barcelona de Estudis Internacionals (IBEI) at the Universidad Pompeu Frabra, Barcelona and an Associate Fellow of the Institute of the Americas at UCL. I have advised the EU on the implementation of children’s rights and UNICEF on ring-fencing tax income to improve children’s welfare. I currently serve on the ESRC International Development Expert Group.  My approach to research and policy is interdisciplinary and problem-focused, and I welcome the opportunity to play a part in developing new methodologies in LCAB that will bring together social science, biology and the arts and humanities.

Research

My research interests focus on the inter-related fields of global development, political economy, global governance and human rights. Current projects focus on the impact of child labour on development and wellbeing, the extractive industries and development, the uses of NGO data for development and the promotion of global health goals, and the SDGs more widely, in low and middle income countries. I have a particular interest in the development challenges in Latin America and the Caribbean but have also worked in the Philippines and currently have a major research project in Malawi.
