Moving up in your career

Unlike academic, teaching and research staff, support staff are not able to apply directly for promotion.

Support posts are based on the need of the organisation, rather than the ability of the individual. It is up to you to obtain an appropriate post for your skills and ambitions.

Internal applications

If you are looking to work at a higher grade, keep an eye on current vacancies so you know what is required at that level.

Discuss interesting vacancies with your manager - especially secondment opportunities that could help you develop.

Changing roles

Existing roles can change - sometimes a full restructure within a department, sometimes just changes to one or two roles. If this means increased responsibility for you, it might be appropriate for your manager to request a role review. The outcome may or may not lead to an increase in grade but you may gain new skills and experience that can help you in the future.

Looking further afield

Career aspirations cannot always be fulfilled in one organisation, especially if you are seeking:

  • work at a higher grade where there may be fewer opportunities
  • a position which is particularly sought after and attracts a high degree of competition
  • to work in an area where the skill set is very specific

In some circumstances it can be necessary to look at external opportunities to develop your career.
