Mail Room Porter

Main responsibilities

  • Sorting/despatching and delivering mail to set timescales to achieve:
    1. Collection of outgoing mail by contractor (eg Royal Mail) by end of the same day
    2. Collection and delivery of internal and delivered external mail to departments etc according to set timescales as detailed in the Service Level Agreement
  • To drive University vehicles in the course of mail duties
  • To undertake manual handling training and subsequent tasks
  • To be aware of suspicious articles and be able to take appropriate action
  • Despatching mail using electronic equipment (eg franking machines) to most cost effective carrier

Qualifications and Experience

    • Essential: Full Driving Licence. Working knowledge of computer software relevant to the mail industry eg Parcelforce, Planon, Kinetics
    • Desirable: Trained in bomb awareness, First Aid and/or HOTA fire awareness. Experience in operating modern mailroom machinery.

Skills

  • Essential: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Physically capable of continuous manual handling tasks and spending long stints on feet. Able to work effectively to set deadlines/timescales independently.
  • Desirable: Knowledge of the layout and departmental locations within the university
