It is World Osteoporosis Day on 20 October. To mark this, Occupational Health have again invited OsteoCare East Midlands to bring their ultrasound scanner to York on 17 and 18 October.

What is bone density screening?

Osteoporosis is a condition affecting one in every two women and one in every five men. Women characteristically suffer after the age of menopause, but men can begin to suffer from a much earlier age.

Bone density screening is a way of measuring whether you are at risk of osteoporosis. If you have below normal bone density, you may have many years to alter that status through diet, weight-bearing exercise and lifestyle changes to increase your chances of a long, pain-free life.

How does the test work?

Osteocare's scanner passes ultrasound waves through the bone. The passage of those waves are altered depending on the internal structure and density of the bone. This method of ultrasound scanning is quick, simple, safe, accurate and completely painless. All that is required of you is to remove your shoe and sock/stocking. The scan is completed in less than five minutes and your result is produced immediately.

A confidential explanation is given by a trained technician and you receive your result and interpretation in a booklet along with lifestyle advice that will reduce your risk.
